NISANATH KUNGWANWONG THE NATION November 10, 2014 1:00 am A MAJOR FUEL leak from a PTT Plc pipeline into a community canal in Chiang Mai's Muang district that started on Saturday night will take two days to clean up, district chief Arkhom Sukpan said yesterday.
Some of the 10,000 litres of fuel spread to the Rong Ruan Kham housing estate's drainage canal in tambon Pa Daed and caught fire after a fisherman reportedly threw a lit cigarette into the canal. This had caused damage to two homes and took 15 minutes to put out. At press time there was still a lot of fuel in the canal, which is located next to Chiang Mai International Airport. PTT officials had contained the affected area so fuel would not spread farther and had prepared equipment to clean the canal. The leak occurred while a pipe was being repaired and the authorities were investigating the cause of this, Arkhom said. Airport flights unaffected Meanwhile, airport android apps director Group Captain Wisut Chantana said flights were unaffected despite the leak at the 19th aircraft stand at about 11.15pm on Saturday night. He said the incident did not affect the airport's operation and passengers' safety because the stand was far enough away from the main traffic lane and used for small aircraft only. Apart from the 19th stand, which was closed for an oil clean-up, the rest of the stands were in service, he said. It was reported that PTT would handle any compensation claim for damage to properties on private and state-owned land.
