OnBeep's "Onyx" PTT device
Saw a press release for "Onyx", a slick, wearable PTT device by OnBeep. (see OnBeep intro at link above). It's a device you buy that you clip to your clothing, it pairs with your phone's bluetooth, then uses either WiFi or cellular to connect to others. It was designed by a couple of first-responders who wanted a simple group-connected device that they could use easily & quickly during emergencies, without having to hold one of those giant handheld two-way radios that most firemen & paramedics carry. It looks really clean & slick, like the Nest thermostat for example, only simpler vimeo & smaller of course. It's also noteworthy that one of the principles of OnBeep is a former Motorola & Nextel iDEN product vimeo designer.
A single device costs $99, but it doesn't require any type of subscription (although it does consume data over WiFi or cellular), so compared to the $5/month/line vimeo that Sprint, AT&T and VZ charge for their PTT, this device would pay for itself in 20 months. Of course there are free PTT apps (Zello, Tikl, SDC-Now, etc.), but they all require you to hold the phone in your hand. OnBeep's Onyx clips to your shirt and all you have to do is press the big PTT button at the center of the device when you want to talk to your group or family.
Anyhow, this might be worth a look for any company or family that still uses PTT regularly, wants something that is more convenient to use than any of the PTT services or apps that require you to hold the phone in your hand in order to PTT, or people who don't want to pay the $5/month/line. 1444 Views vimeo Tags: none ( add ) ptt , wearable_tech , onbeep , onyx
Guess my question is (more for curiousity ), what does it use for the PTT interface, does it use an app or does it just use the native PTT that resides on the phone?  Sounda intresting to be sure.  TK241 Report Abuse Like ( 0 )
